I think my theory is still tight.

Here’s what I think so far, and this is a theory so take it with a grain of salt:
To keep up with the illusion that these old women are the town witches, the community could be lying for them and doing the handy work for them. Also they are targeting the last generation of wealth so the money stops. I mean money makes you do crazy things even if it’s just to protect your community.
