The bedroom door flies open in response, unsurprisingly. Both Loren
and Ryke rush in while the patio door slides for Connor’s quick entrance,
his phone still in his hand.

To be so closely tied to Lily and the Calloways makes
me truly realize what I’ve gained by being with Rose.
I have a family. A real family. It’s not something you can win. I didn’t
manipulate a soul to get here. I have it because they like me for me.
Each day, I’m more thankful for them. And I’m more aware of how
much I can lose

“I have a rule about drugs.”
“And what’s that?”
“Don’t do them.” He grins. “My body is a temple.”
“One that only Rose can enter,” Loren banters.
“I’ll let you in sometime, darling. Don’t worry.”
Loren laughs.
I roll my eyes, but I’m actually smiling at their “bromance” that has
been heavily praised on blogs. People only like Connor when he’s with
Loren. It’s weird.

Am I using Loren Hale for his father’s company, the multi-billion
dollar baby product franchise? At first, yes. Now, no.
He’s my real friend. Maybe my first one ever.

I mouth, Don’t fuck with me. These five people mean more to me than
words can express. I’ve never once felt like I had a real family.
But with them—I know I do.

I try to imagine a life without Rose and I see something gray, something
motionless—a world without time and a place without color. I see mundane
and dreary and lackluster.
I can’t lose her.
Not for anything.

Watching Ryke inch around a cobwebbed space in search of a dead rat. I
smile. Fuck sleep. It’s the little things in life that matter most.
