Makepeace’s books were haphazardly shelved. His desk was stacked with files, folders, overflowing binders, and reams of loose papers. Some were typed, some were handwritten, and others appeared photocopied. Half-buried in the midst of all this was a computer. Judging from the paper tsunami around it, the PC’s digital storage capabilities must have been largely untapped.
