Second, the sidelights Algeo provides are helpful and illuminating, but the publishing team could have done him (and us) the favor of setting off these snippets as boxed or otherwise typographically distinct sidebars. Most so far would fit nicely in a single page or a two-page spread. When left as inline text, they come off as rambles, and interfere with the flow of the narrative.

I appreciate the level of detail. Two nitpicks, though. First, it is distracting when references to the main subject alternate between first name and surname. For nonfiction that is positioned as setting straight a segment of historical record, there's more credibility with following the usual practice of surname reference.
