I am LOVING the commentary around the pre-union working conditions from the 1910s in this book like shit was actually so brutal with locking their damn employees into buildings refusing to let them leave and other terrible working conditions. the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was a tragedy that killed over a hundred immigrant women and girls between the ages 14 and 23 bec they were trapped in that damn building

I just read this scene where the brown Puerto Rican with African ancestry is kissed by the white female character and she ran away crying and someone asked if everything was fine and I got SO STRESSED OUT like this is fucking 1910 OH MY GOD why is this scene in this book. I got the WORST flashbacks of American history

so the first mention of an Italian American character in this book is... a mob member. The first character with an explicitly Italian American name is a member of the Italian mob in New York? its the abusive, drunk ex-husband SEAMUS all over again

I dont think i can just go ✨️lol fantasy✨️ regarding these topics when the author decided to have this take place in New York as well as reference real tragedies that have happened so am i supposed to expect *these* things happened but somehow these characters who are a part of the menagerie are treated FAIRLY well when in actuality menageries put people In Cages. like P. T. Barnum is LITERALLY mentioned in this book

im wondering if there author is going to touch on the very real and very exploitative and cruel history of menageries, especially in regards to having PEOPLE as exhibits. considering this book has a merman as an exhibit you'd think this topic would come up. Im half way through and it has not yet and im a bit 🧍🏼considering the main character and also Madam Nayva being Indian and a little person
