I appreciate the dichotomy between the newly elected black sheriff and the rural southern town - it sets him up as a perfect protagonist to subtly advocate for jurisprudence and fairness despite the internal conflicts with his position. I do find the portrayal of the family to be interesting.

I find the insanity defense angle a bit predictable as well as problematic - it is not a “get out of jail free” card and has lasting implications, for life. As an informed author, I would have preferred Grisham detail and develop that process more.
