okay so this is like a very thorough history lesson but if i had to summarise it so far the argument is would be the stories we tell ourselves (which vary by culture and time period) can be what leads to suicide and in the east it's more to do with the group whereas in the west it's more individualistic and to do with perfectionists who fail to live up to their own harsh internal expectations. idk if i agree?

this has hooked me. i thought this was going to be about online narcissism but the first chapter is about suicide. it says most people with depression don't kill themselves. so what is different about the other group? and where is this going? it also says almost everybody has fleeting thoughts of it which surprised me. i'm rather prone to these thoughts so avoiding things that might set it off is important
