It is really easy to go to the dark place in one’s mind reading an account like this one, and thinking of other uncountable atrocities and human cruelties, and ask oneself what is the point of being here, at all, when these horrors can and do happen. The author doesn’t answer that question but does a wonderful job relaying how this family attempts to answer it for themselves.

This biography of a beautiful man, the story of his family, and infuriating and harrowing account of systemic injustice and betrayal also profoundly demonstrates the power of meaning-making for human resilience, endurance, and survival.
