He still can’t seee the thr4ead but he admists that she led them out. He needs to get home so they go through the house and meet nobody. She changes his mind when she invites him to meet her grandmother.

The thread takes them to a hole where they hear two things: running water and goblins at work. She drops into the hole because the thread takes her there. She lands in the water. Curdie has to make the hole bigger for himself. They follow the stream and he has to pick at stone here and there. They see light and come out of the mountain. They are shocked to find themselves in Irene’s backyard.

When Irene tells her story, he does not believe it. In fact, he is the belly because he cannot accept what he cannot experience with his five senses. Wait! If she is wearing her grandmother’s cloak, that is a change of identity and she is the source of wisdom and insight. She is in the vertical plane, leading Curdie out. She has already told him *ten* times about the thread! When he tries, he cannot feel the thread.

They put out the torch and the goblins will lose time trying to light theirs. Irene grabs Curdie’s hand and they run. He holds the pickaxe and the shoe. They continue to bicker about Irene’s method of escape. After all he has seen, Curdie still thinks it’s nonsense. He thinks they are safe because the king and queen are too stout for the hole. Since there are no goblins, they catch each other up on what has gone on.

He has Irene lower the torch because he sees his pickaxe next to the goblin queen while she sleeps. He takes his pickaxe HARROWING OF HELL. Then he goes to far, of course, as it always happens. He cannot resist temptation. He pulls off one stone shoe to see six ungly feet. His rational is to keep her from hurting miners with those shoes. Pulling off the second wakes them up.

He feels around for his pickaxe but finds a torch. Irene follows the thread but Curdie tells her it’s the wrong way. Irene tells him it does not matter because she must follow the thread. Curdie decides to follow her to keep her from harm. He follows her through a narrow hole that he thinks is too narrow but it ends up in a wideer passage. He is mystified. He follows her even though he cannot explain it.

Thread does not go down into the hole. It zigzags around as if to tell her to remove all the stones, instead of a narrow gap. She does not lose courage because when a pile of stones are pulled, she feels the tug of the thread. She got halfway down the pile and she is startled by Curdie’s rhymes. Then he remembers he needs to be weak. Then he wonders who the girl is because he doesn’t recognize Irene.

Ch. 21 Harrowing of Hell and she’s using Ariadne’s thread. Instead of betraying her country, this Ariadne goes into the labyrinth, guided by good, to free the captive. She stops crying and realizes that she must remove stones one at a time to to find out where the thread goes. She is sure it will bring her to her grandmother. She works diligently to the point of her hands bleeding.

She finally reaches the mica window and the fiery red opals. Then she reaches the pile of stones outside where Curdie is making up rhymes. She does not know what to do because the thread seems to have disappeared. She cries and then decides to return home. The string behind her has vanished and she can only move forward. She cries some more on the pile of stones outside of Curdie’s hole.

She turns down the road where she firt met Curdie because he had been coming from the mines. She sees a stream running alongside the road. Soon, the stream goes into a hole in the mountains as does the thread. THIS IS THE ENTRANCE TO HELL. She shudders but goes in the darkness and follows the thread. She remembers her grandmother, the lamp, and the fiery red roses. She follows the thread for a long time.
