That was a brilliant escape, Jean Valjean!

Finally finished Waterloo. A bit of a drag, and almost irrelevant to the storyline, but interesting at parts. Still behind schedule.

"He continued questioning himself, sternly asking what he had meant by this: "My goal is achieved." He told himself that his life truly did have a goal. But what goal? To conceal his name? To deceive the police? Was it for so petty a thing that he had done all he had done? Had he no other goal, the great one, the true one? To save, not his body, but his soul. To become honest and good again. To be an upright man!"

Poor Fantine.

A wonderful thing about reading one chapter per day is the chance to focus on the beauty and meaning of each chapter. Today's chapter was Book 2, chapter VIII - "Deep Waters, Dark Shadows". Poignant, dazzling, dismal.
