"When trees sink and rocks float" (浮石沈木, fuseki chinboku or ishi o ukase, ki o shizumu) is an ancient East Asian proverb originating from the Chinese text Xīnyǔ (新語). It is often referenced in Japanese literature, including the works of author Haruki Murakami.

He wrote his first book in simple English, and then translated them into Japanese?
That explains why his Japanese sounds English i.e. slightly off and weird in a pretentious way.
