Too dark. Credit to Dubus who can bring the reader into the deep desperation of Tom Lowe’s circumstances and those surrounding him. This immersion in scarcity is too real for me.

I’m like a child watching a scary movie. I need to turn it off. Because it’s that good.

This is a tough start. Typically, Dubus’ books enchant me and keep me turning pages. I have a feeling this one is setting up differently with intention - as a vehicle to get the reader feeling the pain of the dragged out main character.
