Growing up completely neglected in a home stripped of food, furniture, and dignity, Nana learned that traditional work (like her mother’s endless, backbreaking laundry labor) leads strictly to poverty, physical deformity, and exploitation by men.

Zola’s 19th-century view was flawed because he treated his characters like logic puzzles or biological machines that just malfunctioned. But true human experience and modern psychology tells us the exact opposite. Gervaise didn't need an expert to explain the chemistry of the assommoir to her. She needed a safe home, her independence back, and a world that didn't exploit her labor and strip her of her human rights.

If Gervaise had remained single, her money would have been hers. She could have paid her suppliers, paid her rent, and insulated her business.

Zola uses her goodness as a neighbor to make her ultimate trajectory even more heartbreaking. She isn't falling because she is a bad or cruel person; she is falling despite being one of the kindest, most generous souls in the entire Rue de la Goutte-d'Or. Her boundaries are fiercely protective of others, but when it comes to herself, she just keeps giving until there is nothing left.
