'There was a tine when I thought this was a good thing,' Donald said. 'What they did, trying to save the world. They had me convinced that a mass extinctions was inevitable, that a war was about to break out & claim everyone. But you know what I think? They made sure the destruction was complete so they could control it.'
'They wanted to make sure the only pockets of people who survive were in their pockets,' Charlotte said.
'Exactly. They weren't trying to save the world, they were trying to save themselves. Even if we'd go extinct, the world would've gone right on along without us. Nature finds a way.'

'We ought to make things how they used to be,' Elise told them both.
For some reason that made Jewel laugh. 'You're too young to be nostalgic,' she said.
Elise asked what nostalgic meant, and Jewel said 'It's where you think the past was better than it really was, only because the present sucks so bad.'

'What lasts forever?' she obliged [...] 'Our decisions,' he said. [...] Lukas turned to face her. 'Yeah. Our actions, you know? They last for ever. Whatever we do, it'll always be what we did. There is no taking them back.'

'It doesn't bother me that I won't be around one day,' Lukas said after a while. 'I don't stress about the fact that I wasn't here 100 years ago. I think death will be a lot like that. 100 years from now my life will be just like it was 100 years ago.'

As she turned, the woman rubbed the cross and kissed it and Juliette thought of Father Wendel and the idea that she was bringing fear, not hope, to the silo. For all they knew, these were the first tests made of the outside air. Reams & reams of bogus reports from previous cleanings had been nothing but numbers used to uphold & justify fears. It was a charade of progress, of efforts being made to right the world, when all they ever cared about was selling the story of how wrong it was.

Hand frowned. 'You know I trust you and all, but when you tell people around here that things are going to improve, all they hear is that things are going to change. And for those who are breathing and count that as a blessing, they take that to mean one thing and one thing only.'
