I didn't want to feel bad for Walter but I do anyways. Accidentally falling in love just happens and sometimes the circumstances really suck. In other news I continue to adore Marian Halcombe who is the best, as I can forgive the internalized misogyny given the time period.

Walter Hartright strikes me as the sort of man who thinks he's a chill and normal guy who would make FB posts about clocking "fake women" and yet insist he's not transphobic because he's okay with ugly women existing and that's the same thing . Also his new boss is insufferable but wildly entertaining. Walter probably deserves to have to deal with him. This book continues to be hilarious.

I'm sorry, but what is this man thinking? He lets his mom and sister bully him into leaving late and shows up to the house he's going to be working at at like two in the morning, like that's okay?!? And why did his mom and sister delay him in the guest place, given THEY pressured him into taking the job to begin with? And now he's being super hateful about the looks of the lady getting him in the morning. Rude!

Aww man. Is my brain gonna treat this book like the Old Gods of Appalachia podcast, where it decided that the very beginning was wonderful and it wanted nothing to do with any other part of the story, thus cursing me to listen to just the start over and over and over, unable to process or care about the rest? I'm afraid it might, which would be a bummer. I guess we'll see! Time to listen to ch 1-3 for the 6th time!

Only like an hour into the audiobook but I genuinely love it so far. Very funny, very interesting, and seemingly about to get very mysterious!

I'm never going to finish this book at this rate! I keep repeating the same little bit, the beginning of the first proper chapter. Because the narrator has made the Professor the funniest man in the world and I keep cracking up until I cry. I know this book is eventually going to be a mystery, but right now it's simply humor for me and I'm not mad about it.

"If the machinery of the Law could be depended on to fathom every case of suspicion, and to conduct every process of inquiry, with moderate assistance only from the lubricating influences of oil of gold, the events which fill these pages might have claimed their share of the public attention in a Court of Justice." Golly, I'm glad things have changed since 1859, AH HA HA I'm not crying, you're crying.
