Dominos…starting from a single brick but fanning out across many paths.
All the bricks cascading to that one horrible but very believable tragic ending.
That monster that we all fear.
It’s there.
At the convergence.
And all you can do is watch it unfold.

Right around page 87 of this particular edition of Cujo is where you hear Donna’s stay-at-home mom confession/explanation of the big bad mistake. As confessions go, it’s extraordinarily revealing. Oddly enough, however, it bought to my mind the Stepford Wives in that societal-commenting, feminist horror book by Ira Levin (1972, I think). There’s a lot to consider in Donna’s confession to her hubby Vic.

Encounters. That’s King’s greatest gift. Knowing how to initiate them, how to elevate them, how to drag them out just that little bit more, and the finally how to break them off. Chilling, nerve-bunching, exhaustingly sweaty scare encounters.

Bad men doing bad things of their own accord and with no real regrets.
Good dogs paying a horrible price for doing normal doggone things.

Down with reading this for the second time. I was just a teenager when I read it the first time. Wondering what my older eyes and heart will think of it.
