Some really good world building in the first section. Taking a Canterbury tales-esque approach to telling the stories of all the people involved in this 7 person pilgrimage to see the Shrike on Hyperion. Had some other resemblances. Speaker for the dead comes to mind, but it is quite different. I like it.

consul's story pretty confusing and disjointed at first, but slowly converges and ends with a shocking conclusion. Book ends in a cliffhanger, but oddly satisfying.

what a story! so many questions... and also the least believable part of the book, but still enjoyable. Just ignore all the impossible stuff.

Poets story was probably my favorite. He's a jerk, but he actually made me laugh out loud when he had this extravagant realization about poetry and good poets, then said his companions just laughed and walked away cause of his fugue condition everything only came out as cursing. The scholar's story was tragic and very feely. A little drawn out, but still good. I like this book.

The second story was tough to get through, fairly boring and cliche but ended with a twist that made it worth reading. I am still enjoying the book.
