Thematically the book is about the destruction of Russian religion by the enlightenment and the rise of nihilism and Communism in Russian culture. The story is about a family of brothers in a mid-19th Century Russian town. It is an amazing accomplishment of integrating an abstract theme to a plot.

I'm re-reading "The Mysterious Visitor."
