The memories of the narrator’s mother coming back with the taste of coffee was a smart choice. I felt sick. At the memories of her mother and then her time with the tarantula kids. I’m also glad that we got a bit more information about the great catastrophe, the animals going around in circles without stopping creeped me out. I’ve seen videos of them doing that a while ago and it is very troubling to see.

I cannot wait to read Tender is the Flesh and her short story collections. I want to read Ángeles Salvador since the author had recommended her but it’ll be a while from now since I don’t know Spanish and none of her books (that I know of) has been translated into a language that I can read. That was very good. Very hard-hitting. It’ll stay with me for a while.

I loved the narrator’s relationship with books and writing too. As an artistic person, I do understand the narrator’s need to write, and to keep it close, despite how dangerous it was to do so, despite the fact that it might kill her. I love her name for the cat. Circe is a very good name for a cat. Calling her with pet names like “my enchantress” almost always makes me tear up. I really loved this book.

I loved the relationship the narrator had with her mother. It was so sweet. I knew the Enlightened were going through some horrible things but this was vile. I feel so bad for everyone who wound up trapped in that hell hole. I loved the way the narrator wrote (and by extension the author) it was almost impossible to put this book down! I flew through it (by my pace that would be three days) it was really good.

I love the things that were left without explanation; Lucía’s miracles, her dream of the narrator before they met, and the lake with green mountains. I choose to believe that her dream about the lake was true, that the world was healing beyond the House of the Sacred Sisterhood. We’ve seen signs of this near the end: the bee, the vulture, the flowers in the Enlightened ceremony. It is sad that the narrator died.

I loved the recurring mentions of the crickets. They’re always there, with their maddening noise. I wonder how this book will do as a movie. I can see it clearly. & I think if the audio design/production was good it’d be really great. But I digress. I loved how open ended it was. The narrator could’ve ended her life but they also could’ve gotten here(though I hope not)& it’s very disturbing to even consider

read it. I loved all the horrors; from the world slowly disintegrating into an arid wasteland to the horrors the unworthy inflict on each other to the horrors inflicted upon them by the Superior Sister and the world. There are some scenes here that will forever be engraved on my mind. It was so vivid and clear! Which is what you’d want from a book (or at least what I would want from a book) for better or worse.

I love post-apocalyptic stories. And I have (secretly) made it my life’s mission to read and watch every single one of them (provided that they’re good, but I don’t adhere too much to this rule). And this has been wonderful(ly) dark and disturbing. I loved the writing so much, and I loved that the narrator has written this book on (and by) whatever she’s got her hands on, and I loved how meta it was for us to

I feel so bad for the narrator. And for Circe. And even though I did not like Lourdes, her death was horrific. The amanita might’ve been a mercy in hindsight. He and the Superior Sister are killing them off huh? It’s crazy.

Circe is a cat…I don’t want to know what happened to her anymore. I feel sick. How much pain can the narrator take? Please stop this. Is Lucía a witch? Is she? How can you explain the things that she can do? At first, I thought she was a very clever manipulator but it really seems like she isn’t. Is she Helena reincarnated? Or maybe her soul, back for vengeance? There are a lot of weird similarities hmm
