Here is my prediction. Arthur Sr. gets drunk and hits either his wife or his son. While he sleeps, she flees. Gilbert, who has been reading this, goes to talk to Helen, but he comes across a stranger who happens to be Arthur Sr. to bring Helen back home. Fight ensues, as Gilbert protects Helen and her child, he pushes Arthur Sr. into a rock, where he dies.
Then it is happily ever after.

Millicent has an abusive husband. I think Arthur is getting to that point. He didn't let Helen go to her father's funeral! That is awful!!! It will be a few chapters before he uses his hands on her or the boy.

This book reminds me of Jane Eyre. Almost like Helen is Mr. Rodchester in a lot of ways; mysterious, dark, enjoys gloomy rooms, withdrawn, etc.

The first chapter is in letter format. I hope that this does not continue through the entire book. I'm very partial to 3rd person narrative rather than 1st.
