Something this book does very well is explore how the way people thought about kings changed over time, from before the Norman Conquest up to the Tudors. The evolution of "King of England" going from "guy who has a crown bc thats what the Romans did" to "now we have a definite line of succession" to "with all the usurping that's going on, surely anyone vaguely royal enough can take a crack at it" is very interesting.

This book is more comedy than history, which I don't mind because I get to read sentences like "Dying was by far the most successful and astute thing King John did in his entire reign."

"He suddenly died, there was a succession crisis, and everything was immediately fucked again." this is always happening
