It's fascinating to me how slave ownership completely fucked the southern economy overall when compared to the north. There was no drive to invest in infrastructure or education in the south because of it, and it caused more harm than good for the whites in general. It really only benefited the slave owners themselves.

So far, the exploitation and never-ending growth needed for Capitalism to function has only been minimally glossed over. It's still early in the book, and at least it hasn't been entirely ignored.
