WOW chapter 10 was so good & i was not expecting it at all. somehow went from dinosaurs and geology and earth science to human civilizations to the history and geopolitics of US in the middle east😭😭😭😭but so relevant for today and i’m very glad i bought this book on a whim. best spontaneous book purchase yet

getting close to end of book!! what i have learned: dover england - white cliffs entirely made of phytoplankton carbonate skeletons from bottom of ocean. phytoplankton builld skeletons from co2 in ocean into carbonate then die and go to sea floor.
pangea had surface temps up to 180F, ocean super acidic, some lakes negative ph. carbon couldnt erode away. large land masses like pangea are fundamentally unstable

learning about a popular theory of life forming at geothermal vents and not because it was by chance, but a necessity thermodynamically. also how our cells work mechanically like how we have turbines, crankshafts, etc. equivalents in cells. also energy across membrane of mitochondria is the same as lightning bolt!

I like it so far! I like how the author writes as if he isn’t a human himself. I like how broadly he speaks as if humans are just a ting speck of dust on our planet (which is true). Even the way he describes political things he’ll do it in a way that is very far removed. I am very excited about this book, I love science + history with a focus on chemistry books!!!
