Note sure I 100% understood the types of enemies from the Love chapter besides
Enemies in Close Contact
Enemies Representing the State
Enemies who face societal marginalization even within marginalized groups

I get what he’s saying about the two young black teens making fun of the white children but it also struck me as gallows humor which most marginalized people under oppression touch on since it’s literally not safe to actually mock more privileged people In public

The anecdote about the old white lady trying to turn a presumably still segregated train car against Thurman as the only black person in the train car was haunting. It does remind me I need to finish “They were her property” by Stephanie Jones-Roger’s because she literally pulls historical moments like this throughout the book to talk about how segregation was enforced at all levels by white southernwomen+kids

Chapter 3 is interesting because we go from pretty straight forward concepts to a more broad “Is it immoral for marginalized people to diminish themselves and unconsciously deceive themselves into believing they are unable to liberate themselves systemic discrimination. Also can we truly liberate ourselves if we don’t de program ourselves from institutional violence we apply to other marginalized groups”

It’s interesting to interrogate Jesus as a salve against fear since that isn’t such a platitude but many people of faith also rely on it heavily

I also like that we are acknowledging that segregation inherently has a marginalized and empowered group and it’s not just strict separate spheres devoid of political weight

I like that this section reinforces Jesus as coming from an occupied territory like the more contemporary Japanese occupation of Korea. But there is still an valid lens for Black people who experience a white nationalist nation in the form of America that doesn’t reinforce their right to have a distinct culture
