I have wracked my brain trying to come up with another classic comic book hero for whom trauma predetermined his powers. Sure, Superman lost a whole planet, arguably a worse situation, but he would still be Superman under a yellow sun regardless of whether he had anyone to write home to. Also: he didn't see his parents die. Also: he's nice. His loss didn't make him swear vengeance on anyone.
