I repeat, this book hurts. I cannot imagine such an experience and yet I know hundreds of thousands have possibly lived it. To be violated is the reality of women from all works of life, regardless of their social standing. But the feral nature of men who abuse women thus makes me think how we birth animals. It is so sad how rape has been the start of so many marriages for black women. Alice was raped by someone she loves and because she loves him, she is not lamenting his brutality towards her but the fact that he has made her a wife before she was ready. I wonder if the aunt knew something about this Jeff and so she decided to be nice knowing what was coming.
