Especially for internal thoughts the use is odd

“How pretty she looks, how pious!” Once again weird exclamation and considering the inner monologue was very calm and normal before.

This author uses the exclamation mark in weird ways and in almost inappropriate sentences. Like something that does not need it, we can understand the grotesque nature without an exclamation mark

This book is the king of non Sequitur thoughts.
