I love how the story starts with the dreamer man essentially personifying Saint Petersburg because he is so lonely 💔. His vulnerability & honesty with the woman is so refreshing - expressing his emotions.

So beautifully written , very much like the style of Madame Bovary (1856)!! I truly feel for the dreamer 😭
“Why not say straight out what is in one's heart, when one knows that one is not speaking idly? As it is every one seems harsher than he really is, as though all were afraid of doing injustice to their feelings, by being too quick to express them." (p.49) so true.
