CONFLICT:Lia faces a tough character vs. self conflict. Grieving her mother, she admits, "I'd feel a kind of dull ache in my chest, a missing-Mom ache" (23). Without her mom, she feels totally alone. Feeling like a late bloomer, Lia tells white lies during a game just to fit in with her peers. By the end of the story, she overcomes this internal isolation when she accepts herself.

CHARACTERIZATION: Lia feels overwhelmed and left out as her friends start maturing leading to lies about her summer during a game of Truth or Dare. "I thought about the lie I told my friends. but here's the truth-by the next morning I felt proud of myself...I kissed Tanner-I had bloomed into a gorgeous pink flower overnight." (89) Later, Lia realizes she needs to stop faking it and be honest with herself and others.
