Falk To me, Allen’s translations are a bit uneven when it comes to readability, I thought so already in the Ion, and also in Laches. Sometimes the syntax is really odd, though the translation (I suppose) must be correct - at least in that he’s likely not adding any words for readability. The introductions are generally good, though the intro to Protagoras is about 80 pages long! I’m not sure why he feels it necessary to comment on so much of it, though I am also intrigued by what he leaves out in the commentary. After a quick comparison, I’ve decided to read a different translation of Protagoras for a first read, while sticking with Allen’s commentary along the way. Not sure how long I’ll continue with this though – though they’re kind of complementing each other for now..
