Charlie challenges himself throughout the story. There is no set person that troubles Charlie. He wants to figure himself out, but he is not completely sure how to do so. He wanders off and does new things to find a place in the world. The problem is that Charlie seeks to know "what is wrong with him." Through interactions with other people, Charlie knows that he is not like most students.

Charlie has been in love with Sam from the day her saw her. Sam happens to be older than Charlie, and she has her heart set on another guy. Charlie has to pack down how he feels in order for her to stay around. Charlie does not want to destroy the friendship that they have. Sam encourages Charlie to go out and try new things. Because he is not used to the encouragement, he fell in love with her personality.

When they share intimacy, they have connection Charlie has searched so long for. The author makes it clear that Charlie has grown from Sam. It shifts the focus of the reader. The vulnerability of a touch from the one you love really resembles Charlie.

I started the book not too long ago, so I am unable to sort through the theme. But I do know the format, and that may connect to the theme. The format of the story has been letters to a person that has not been revealed yet. Because they are letters, that may track back to a lost love or another person that means a lot to the character. I can only assume that these letters would be brought back up.
