After a few days at the house, David was about to leave when he overheard the parents talking. They said David was a very strange, but kind boy. They also said that he should leave as soon as possible because David was talking to Maria about unsettling topics that they felt like she didn't need to know as a child. Before David left, he wrote a note explaining that he overheard the parents, and decided to leave.

SPOILERS!!! After David rescues the little girl, he politely accepts the offer to stay for a while at the family's house. They feed, clothe, and bathe him while he was staying, since they were a wealthy family. He loves to read books there even though the kids are always wanting him to play.

SPOILERS!!! David is slowly feeling more comfortable around other people. In fact, he is earning some money for food by doing simple jobs. Once he was resting when he saw a burning shed with a girl inside. Then David quickly got the girl out, and got a lot of praise in return.

A young Jewish boy named David, that lives in a concentration camp, escapes and ventures out into the world in hope of freedom. His only supplies are a compass and a small amount of food. He hops a boat to Italy in hopes of finding Denmark, where he thinks he will be safe. This is what an adult in the concentration camp instructed him to do.
