This has come up a few times, but what language are they speaking? Does everyone in this book speak English? In the Zone, are they all speaking German and Pynchon is translating? It seems unlikely that a random Russian soldier they run into deep in Germany would just automatically speak English.

Pynchon’s read his Joyce—heliotrope, opening quote referencing metempsychosis, reference to Joyce in Zürich.
A lot of this is intentionally off-putting and the farcical bits are eye-roll-inducing. I enjoyed the parts during the war, but that’s slowly ground to a halt since entering the Zone and at the midpoint it’s a slog. Probably this is meant to echo the arch of a V2?
