Some of the men in the refuge go out to explore for any possible exits. Mario Sepulveda, one of the miners, tries to climb the chimney of the mine, but is unsuccessful in doing so. Before the men left to go exploring, they ask one of the miners to guard the emergency supply of tuna fish and cookies, but some of miners resting in the refuge refuse to accept that, and yell in protest.

I read about the way some of the miners "behave" in the mine. Since all of the miners mine on different levels, its hard for the ones at the bottom to hear the imposing threat of a huge chunk of rock falling down to them. Some of the workers, like Samuel Avalos, who like to chill around in the "Refuge" for a fair amount of time. I also read about the miners families, and how devastated they are to hear the news.

A group of miners discovered a finger sized crack in the ramp leading out to the surface. The miners asked their supervisor about what to do, and he said he'll send the "government" to "inspect" it. As the supervisor's making his way out of the mine, more miners hear a low wailing sound, and they suddenly freeze up as they watch a cloud of dust filling up the mine, and then they realize the mines collapsing.
