If the criminals are after payback money, why would they execute the source of the money? Isn't it more likely that they would execute someone to stop the revelation (and possible prosecution) of their criminal activity?

Just how rich is this woman supposed to be? She's supporting a family of kids, will rebuild the church if necessary, now is talking about helping send an employee to law school (probably cheaper in the UK, but still). Maybe a bit of Mary Sue happening here?
