Note: Psalm 115 shows idols as unseeing, unhearing—and worshippers “become like them.” The prophets and Romans 1 connect this to blindness and darkened hearts (hardening). I haven’t read Meadors, but this likely supports his point: Idols model unresponsiveness, and worshippers take on that same hardened condition. Worship reshapes perception, leading to diminished responsiveness to truth. Need to read Meadors' book.
