I knew it, she's gay. 1960s society is keeping her from acting on it, which is sad. I really want to know the fallout of Todd and Rafi and Ina. I can see why Rafi is playing his cards close to his chest, and it's clear Todd fumbles at times, but goddamn do I just want to give Rafi a shake sometimes for being so obtuse. I wish I knew how young Rafi treated Ina, because I don't understand how their relationship worked.

Todd is 100% capturing his story using AI or something. Also, what does he mean "should have ended up together"? Evie being gay, as I suspect, is the least surprising thing but I like it. If that's what happens, I am eager to see how the author carries forward her arc. I am not sure if I like Rafi... but he's been dealt a tough hand. This is good! An easy read, but compelling. Slow, though...

I quite like this cast of characters! Evie is a badass and I'm loving her story. Rafi is also very cool and I'd be kidding if I said I didn't enjoy the Chicago setting. This book is excellent ocean propaganda, but I will not be influenced into any deep-sea ventures. That shit is scary.

New library read! I really liked the environmental, conservationist angle of "The Deluge" and this book is (allegedly) similar in that way. So far it's good, and I need to look up Makatea to get a better understanding of the setting. The idea of living on an island like that is deeply unsettling to me, so I definitely feel a bit perturbed at times while reading descriptions of the island.
