Yeah, this isn't doing it for me. It's YA? Okay, fine. But there's so little meat on the bones here for both the characters and the worldbuilding.

Feeling this was a mistake. Kaufman is no stranger to using cliches in sci-fi (see the Aurora Cycle), but here, the writing is too simplistic to make up for it. There's no shortage of works that deal with human settlement of Mars, but to borrow a quote, "this ain't it, chief."
