Okay, so I’m guessing it’s at least 2040, since the doomsday cult started in 2025, there was a statement in the cult made in 2038, And then Benji is 16, evading the chaos since he was 14

(Side note: I know we’re treating the Seraph and Benji as different characters but it does feel weird to call the seraph an it if Benji is canonically transgender. Like he told us how he wants to be called, we should respect that)

So yeah, it does annoy me a little when fans of a book only tell you about this gay rep. Because yeah, gay rep for teens is a thing we need more of! But this is definitely not a romance story, and it would be misleading to say it is. I assume they’ll be a romance b plot later on, but right now, it’s all gunshot wounds and nightmare mutants and Benji suffering

Updating my opinions just so I have them in one place:
Literally all I associated with this book before picking it up was “it’s gay.” And yeah, it is pretty gay, lots of gay people in this book. But there’s also graphic body horror, the end of the world as we know it, a pseudo-Christian cult siding with the monsters, and the main character regularly vomits up his own decomposing organs!

Why is the whole “believing in something but not being sure what you believe in” so relatable…

1: yay, an apocalypse story that acknowledges people still have periods and still need sanitary products!
2: oh no, the MC is trans, he probably feels terrible dealing with that :(
3: oh right, the MC bears a curse that makes him vomit out a mysterious ichor. He already feels terrible
4: can we go back to how they actually acknowledged that periods still exist in the apocalypse? Because istg everyone forgets

So far, everybody but the (dead) Angels are transgender and I kind of like that. Give them the ole switcheroo

Can I just say: in a story with literal angels of death and body horror mutants, it’s really cool that they chose to have one of the (presumably) human characters be the one to use neo pronouns. Usually, authors only give those to aliens or otherworldly beings, but there’s nothing stopping a normal human from using them, too so why not give it a shot?
