A man who knows people’s darkest secrets and uses it to control them. Sounds familiar. It’s a similar theme as in first book. Where did the magician disappear to? Bellmann definitely has other motives for wanting to marry Mary, probably to do with the graphite mines.

Excellent so far. Doesn’t focus on unnecessary flowery details. Feeds you information at a good pace without rushing into the mystery or needlessly dragging it out. The pace is perfect. I’m hooked.

I can already tell I’m going to like this book because I like the authors writing style, and she opened with a hint at the mystery. A ship disappearing in an unexplainable manner. It always has a historical fiction angle hitting on a time period when women had to fight for their rights in society. Plus, I already love Chaka the giant dog.

Off to a good start. Since I’m apparently reading the books out of order, it was nice that the author did a little recap on who some of the characters are sort of like the recap be more each episode on a TV series. Short but informative
