Robbie and Skylar fell sideways into the grass, laughing until their sides were on fire, and only when their amusement died down did they look at each other and mouth the words I love you. Words that would be echoed every day after that for the rest of their lives.

“Okay, Robbie,” she whispered. “I’ll take that set of keys.”
His parents ever so faintly heard their son’s cheer of victory from outside the fence of the Preserve. They high-fived.
“We’ll offer to split the wedding with her folks, I think.”
A gusting sigh followed, but there was a smile behind it. “Fine.”

Chloe sniffled.
Sig turned her face into his shoulder and started to rub her back without missing a beat, gesturing for Robbie to continue.

“I want to be here, too, of course I do, because I love you. I love you, Skylar. But I’m fucking mad. And I feel empty and sick right now and you’re the one. You taught me to trust what I’m feeling and stop laughing everything off. So I can’t laugh at this. I can’t pretend I’m not feeling judged and punished when I just came here to love you.”

“This is about Eve.” His blue eyes lifted to meet hers. “To me, everything . . . is about Eve.”
Clarity was a bitch.
Her confusion gave way within seconds, parting like dark storm clouds to reveal the brightest clear blue sky imaginable, a sun glaring at her from the very center.
Madden was in love with Eve.

With all those words hanging in the atmosphere, echoing back to Robbie in his ears, he suddenly knew. He had to try. He had to try to make Skylar fall in love with him, instead of Madden.
He also knew exactly where to start.
“Get back to Rhode Island and try, Corrigan,” Sig said, correctly interpreting Robbie’s silence as an epiphany. “You might never get this chance again.”

“Is it always this hard when you meet the one?” “Yes,” Sig and Burgess said in unison.
“Did you ever think life would be easier if you’d just never met her to begin with?”
“No.” Again, in unison.

“I probably wouldn’t have invited him to meet my parents so soon, but Eve couldn’t make it.”
For some reason, Madden’s eyes darkened dramatically at the mention of her best friend. “Right.” He looked down, scuffing the dirt with his boot. “Eve.”

Yeah no reason whatsoever😅😂

“What a woman,” Robbie whispered, rubbing the center of his chest. He’d just signed himself up for hell. But Skylar? She was worth it.
