Minerva and Diomed hurt Mars quite a bit, and now the gods are apparently sitting back.

A lot happened and there was a lot of death, less gruesome than before. The gods are getting more involved as well and I’m curious what will happen when Minerva and Mars clash.

The fighting was much more gruesome than I expected. It detailed every fighter who died and every wound they suffered. I wasn’t expecting Venus to be injured as well, since she’s a god, but I guess they can also be hurt.

The descriptions of the battle were surprisingly gruesome. I was expecting it to be laborious in its description of the fighters who are fighting and dying, and I was right. It describes every man and his origins.

These pages were just descriptions of men getting ready for battle, along with which were brave and which were cowardly.

The fight was actually something more in between what I was expecting. I also wasn’t expecting the gods to break the oath like that either.

Menelaus and Paris are about to fight and I’m curious how it will go in the book. I could see it ending very short with a simple description of the victor, probably crediting the virtues of that victor as the reasons for his triumph. I could also see it making a very clear description of the wounds inflicted and certain events in the battle. I imagine both ways there will be large speeches.

Most of this was Homer listing the names of the people fighting and where they came from, and I could have easily skipped that.

It lost me when Jove sent his messenger to Agamemnon. It says that Jove encouraged Agamemnon to sail to Troy, I think, and then it says that Agamemnon gave a speech to his soldiers saying that they were turning around, almost as if it jumped to the future after the invasion of Troy. I’m certain I missed something, which was bound to happen sooner or later in this book.

I finished the first chapter, and it’s definitely a difficult read. It’s pretty good, even if it bounces around topics more than normal.
