It’s very tragic for Margaret to lose both her parents in this manner but what may be more tragic is that that fact was spoiled for me within the notes of the book

In response to Higgin’s expressed desire to go to the South for laborin’, Margaret gives this speech about how working that vocation rots your brain to the point where you can’t have critical thoughts or reflective conversations and I think that’s an interesting thought to have during such pious times

This trope of “ doing something good but not letting your crush know and then they find out somehow anyways “ is so interesting and I wonder how it affected readers and the culture at large

I’ve been reading this book for so long I right forgot who Edith even was

John is so funny for getting on that omnibus to avoid the trouble of telling the driver that he wasn’t waiting for it.

That interaction between him and his mother at the end of this chapter was so curious. To see them go to such a frigid rapport after their first real mother son bond only because she hates Margaret so much. Tragic imo

That was a harsh rejection, man. I feel like Margaret might be gay.

I wonder how Margaret’s relationship with the turnouts will progress as the story goes. It would be disappointing if we only see Mr Thornton’s pov.
The strikers need a leader with some cult of personality

These damn working class English accents are so damn hard to follow

Awe Thornton loves Maggie so much but they either have a pretty big difference in political opinion or she just straight up dislikes him heavy lol

So they have a mill that secretes dust that gives byssinosis and they can put up a wheel that reduces this dust but it “costs money and produces no profits“ and on top of that the man who are used to working with it say that the dust being filtered removes a satiation of appetite that they are used to.
Crazy.
