The careers of Austen’s naval brothers were linked to the Empire’s colonialism, slave trade and wars. Frank Austen actually travelled to China and supposedly, made money from the opium trade. Having a complex feeling when reading this.

Chapter 10 is by far the best chapter in this book. I have always been moved by the fact that Austen defied expectations to remain single in order to continue her writing.

The book is organised thematically. I don’t think this works very well for Jane Austen’s life. But I do get some extra knowledge about Austen from it.
