“There is, as we know, a philosophy that denies the infinite. There is also a philosophy, of a pathological order, that denies the sun: this philosophy is called blindness.

To take a perception we lack and set it up as a source of truth, that is the hubris of a blind man!”

Just because you don’t have the faculty to see, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Very interesting argument on the infinite.

“We have a duty: to work on the human soul, to defend mystery against miracle, to adore the incomprehensible and reject the absurd, to admit as inexplicable only what we must, to purge belief, to cull religion of superstition. To decontaminate God.”

The chapter ‘Prayer’ is reminiscent of my reading of Eckhart Tolle. It’s a very modern interpretation of God, prayer and religion for this time period and one I connect with.

“The I below is the soul, the I above is God. To place the infinite below in contact with the infinite above by the medium of thought, that is called praying.”

“Do these women think? No. Do they have any desire? No. Do they love? No. Do they live? No. Their nerves have turned to bone, their bones to stone. Their veil is woven darkness. Their breath beneath the veil is like some tragic exhalation of death.”

Interesting commentary on nuns by Hugo.

“What must be admired in the battle of Waterloo is England, English steadfastness, English resolution, English blood. With all due respect, what was superb about England in this instance was England herself. […] As far as we are concerned, all our praise goes to the English soldier, the English army, the English people. If trophy there be, it is to England the trophy is due.”

“Was it possible Napoleon might have won that battle? We say no. Why? Because of Wellington? Because of Blücher? No. Because of God. […] The moment had come for the incorruptible supremacy of natural justice to intervene.”

“Numbers mattered little to him, provided they gave this total: victory. It did not alarm him that things should not go according to plan in the early stages; believing as he did that he was master and owner of the outcome, he could wait, assuming that he was beyond question, and he treated destiny as his equal. He seemed to say to fate: You would not dare.”

“He had the feeling that someone could see him. Someone? Who? Alas! What he wanted to shut out had already entered. What he wanted to strike blind was staring at him. His conscience. His conscience, that is to say, God.”

“With even the minimum of care, the nettle would be useful. Neglected, it becomes a nuisance. So we kill it. How like the nettle are so many men! […] My friends, remember this: there are no such things as bad plants or bad men. There are only bad farmers.”
