having finished ‘antigone’:
having been well versed in greek myth since i was a kid, the blatant misogyny in creon was disappointing, but not shocking. having antigone be headstrong, compared to that of a ‘man’, and still having her martyred, preserved as a symbol of persevering love and strength, is more rebellious than i expected. overall loved it!

upon finishing ‘oedipus at colonus’:
probably consists one of my favourite (perhaps even my most) choral odes thus far. the language of describing nightingales’ sounds in the greenery, the description of diadems resting upon the curls of goddesses, aphrodite’s golden rein. also wow sophocles is a comedian about oedipus being related to his daughters.

upon finishing ‘oedipus the king’:
i read polyneices by euripedes before fully dipping my toes into oedipus’ story by sophocles, and wow it really explains why this goes down as one of the most messy families in greek tragedy… talk about generational trauma AND incest!

fresh out of reading ‘elektra’, a tale of generational trauma and dysfunctional families, it’s one of my more favoured plays by sophocles so far.
melancholy plagues electra as the eldest daughter, left at the hands of her mother (clytemnestra), grieving her father, and reuniting with her baby brother. the complexities of their relationship was something i’d love to read more of.
beautiful! i annotated tons.
