“Big mistake, thinking like that. Everybody knows that the guy who starts talking about his sweetheart and the farm he wants to retire to after the war is the next to get splattered. And if the protagonist starts doing it, watch out. I don’t know if I believe in God and hubris, but I definitely believe in the inevitability of dramatic irony.”
