When Eliot writes about Dr. Lydgate it’s like I’m reading We Have Never Been Woke. Dr. Lydgate has liberal ideas and wants to do good work, but he has no notion of sacrificing any personal comforts. And he has such a condescending view of women! The thing about this book is that I’m not that interested in the plot but I love the details where Eliot’s wit and insight shine.
