Thanks for your detailed reply, Gary. The reason I ask is because I read the French to English translation by Joanna Kilmartin & Steve Cox. There is no indication in my 1987 edition of who the translator for the Ploish to French was. I suspect that some of the nuance and intricacies of the original novel may have been lost in this double translation. I can find no author's comment or opinion about it.

The Johnston translation that you are reading is the only translation approved by the author. I'm curious about the audible version and may give it a look-see. Glad you're enjoying your dual-modality read!
