1 - I am heavily resisting the urge to immediately derail reading progress and go rabbit-hole into research on Native American sign-talking; 2 - choice of language is already telling: saying they "reclaimed" the western land when they'd not laid claim prior definitely shows the land entitlement perspective of settlers and colonizers.
